Freshwater

Barrett: Closed to fishing for the season. Open for waterfowl hunting on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Blinds available.

Chollas: Will be stocked this week by the Department of Fish and Game. Open daily to youngsters 15 and under. San Diego Fly Fishers sponsors a Lend-A-Rod program on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It includes free bait and tackle and fishing tips.

Cuyamaca: Waterfowl hunting going strong all day Wednesdays and until 10 a.m. Sundays. The lake is closed to fishing during those periods. The tackle shop opens daily at 8 a.m. on weekdays, 6 a.m. on Saturdays. Hunting blinds available. Cost is $75 a day to hunt. Call supervising ranger Georgia Martin at (619) 447-8123. Britt Jones, Redondo Beach, 3 trout, largest a 3.5-pounder, night crawler, Lone Pine. Jason Thornton, Ramona, 7.4-pound trout, red and white Trout Teaser. Courtland Young, San Diego, 4 trout, total weight 7-0, with a 5-0, Power Bait with night crawler, Dock. Free fishing class every Saturday at 10 a.m. at the launch ramp. Ranger Charlie Taylor will teach the latest techniques for catching trout at Cuyamaca. The decontamination wash-down is mandatory for all private vessels entering the lake. Cost is $10 per vessel. Diamond Valley Lake: Lake will get 2,000 pounds of rainbow trout from Mt. Lassen on Thursday. Bass fishermen drop-shotting plastics are averaging 15- to 20-bass days. Swim baits also producing, along with ice jigs fished deep. The East Dam, West Dam and shoreline fishing to the left of the marina are the best bets. Rene Chavez, Hemet, 6.60 bass, lure, shoreline fishing. Trout fishing has taken off. Good action in 10 to 25 feet of water near the marina and along the shoreline. Pedro Moreno, Buena Park, 5.4 trout, Power Bait, shoreline. Izabella Owizdak, 2.10 trout, western shoreline. Striped bass action also fair. Yvonne Southerland, Fontana, 13-0 striped bass, Z-plug, Shoreline. Open daily. Launch ramp open.

Dixon: Next stock is Jan. 13 with 1,500 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalkers. Fishing has been good. Mike “Budda” Winn, Carlsbad, 7-7 and a 5-12 trout, pink Power Worms, Buoy Line. Bob Pfeifer, Bonsall, 6-12 trout, Thomas Buoyant, Whisker Bay. David Wells, Vista, 4.8 trout, white crappie jig. Open daily.

El Capitan: The 72 anglers reported 67 bass (all released), 31 bluegill, 31 crappie, 5 channel catfish and 10 blue catfish. Matt Lowery, San Diego, 9.20 bass, jig, Harvey Arm. Fishing and water activities permitted Thursdays through Saturdays, with Sundays reserved for water contact only. Fishing only on Mondays. Water contact activities include water-skiing, wake-boarding, Jet Skis, towing inflatables. All persons entering reservoir property must purchase a day-use permit.

Henshaw: Open daily.

Hodges: All private boats must be inspected for quagga mussels before being launched. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Jennings: Good fishing around Cactus Patch and Eagle Point. Shoreline anglers fishing early have the best chance. Stocked this week with 1,000 pounds of trout from Mt. Lassen. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check lakejennings.org for more information.

Loveland: The 56 anglers reported 5 bass (all released) and 5 carp. Open daily to hike-in fishing only on a limited area of shoreline. No permits required. Fishing license is required. Pier open on the west side of the fishing cove.

Miramar: Open daily to fishing and boating. Pay fees at iron ranger or electronic pay station near the concession building. No boat rentals.

Morena: Open daily.

Murray: Open daily to fishing and boating. No boat rentals. Pay fees at iron rangers near the abandoned concession building or at key access points.

Otay, Lower: The 66 anglers checked reported 4 bass kept (67 bass released), 14 bluegill and 6 channel catfish. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay fees at iron rangers near the boat launch and abandoned concession building. No boat rentals until February.

Otay, Upper: Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for fishing, sunrise to sunset. Upper Otay is a catch and release only fishery. Bait is not permitted, only artificial lures with barbless hooks. Boats are not permitted on Upper Otay, only shore fishing, waders and float tubes.

Poway: Good fishing for channel catfish and trout. Hector Baca, Poway, landed a 24-pound channel catfish, the largest fish taken out of the lake in nearly two years. He baited a piece of mackerel at the Log Boom. Bill McFadden, San Diego, 7-0 trout, Needlefish. Alex Anderson, Temecula, 6.5 trout, Rapala, Log Boom. Nick Kayser, Poway, 6.5 channel catfish, night crawler, Log Boom. Matthew Poustchi, San Diego, 6.0 trout, Power Bait, Boulder Bay. Next stocking is Jan. 20, with 1,500 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalkers due. No fishing license required here. Still need fishing permit. Open Wednesday through Sunday. In order to prevent the introduction and infestation of quagga mussels, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway: float tubes, private motors and anchors, live bait containers, fish finders, floating catch baskets, live bait from any source other than the Lake Poway concession, any items the staff considers to be potential contaminants.

Santee Lakes: Big news here is the lake will be stocked again before Jan. 16 with 2,000 pounds of Sierra ’bows for a January Trout Re-Opener. The stock will include some husky trout, tagged for prizes. The plant will go in Lakes 3 and 4. The two anglers who catch the largest trout on Jan. 16 each win an iPod touch. There has been some good trout fishing on Lakes 3 and 4. Marissa Alford, 10, Lakeside, 2 trout, chartreuse Power Bait, Lake 2. Ben Poulson, Santee, 5-8 trout, Power Bait, Lake 4. San Vicente: Closed. For construction schedules and information on the Emergency Storage Project, go to the San Diego County Water Authority’s Web site at sdcwa.org and click on San Vicente Dam Raise.

Sutherland: Closed to fishing.

Sweetwater: The six anglers reported no fish. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday to limited shoreline fishing only.

Wohlford: Next stock of rainbow trout is set for Jan. 13 with 1,500 pounds of Nebraska Tailwalkers scheduled to be released. Good trout fishing with some larger fish caught last week. Khammone Sophabmixay, Escondido, 7-4 trout, green Power Bait, West Senior Shoreline. David Bruce, Chula Vista, 7-3 trout, Power Bait-salmon egg combo, Senior Shoreline. Peter Ortega, 6-8 trout, Power Bait, Boat Dock Cove. Enrico Punzalan, 6-2 trout; Joel Torres, 5-12 trout; Kaylee Hull, 5-5 trout; Nicol Penacho, 5-4 trout; A.J. Hull, 5-0 trout; T.J. Ponder, 4-8 trout; Adam Polecki, 4-6 trout, David Green, 4-5 trout; Brad Davis and Melanie Osteria, 4-3 trout, part of a stringer of trout totaling 12-11; Kendall Lossner, 4-2 trout. Jim Dayberry, who has been supervising Dixon Lake, will move over to take over the supervisor duties at Lake Wohlford now that Jay Cowan has retired. Cowan retired last month after 35 years on the job at Wohlford after starting there as a boat dock attendant. Open daily. Ban on private boats remains in place due to the threat of quagga mussels. Other banned equipment include canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, etc. Rental boats available.

Stocking schedule

Trout: Jennings, 1,000 pounds. The DFG will stock Chollas, Lindo Lake and Lake Murray this week.

Saltwater

Pt. Loma Sportfishing, H&M Landing, Fisherman’s Landing: 28 anglers, two half-day boats — 1 ling cod, 62 boccaccio, 31 rockfish, 1 bonito, 1 yellowtail, 9 sand bass, 4 calico bass, 5 sculpin, 1 white croaker, 1 halibut.

Seaforth: 28 anglers, one twilight boat — 220 giant squid.

Oceanside: Nine anglers, one half-day boat — 8 sand bass, 17 sculpin, 15 rockfish (released), 39 perch.

Cabo San Lucas: As the striper action fell off, the dorado bite took off. Most boats averaging six dorado per day. Yellowfin tuna and a few roosterfish around, too.

Hunting

Waterfowl: Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area — Wed., 201 hunters, 449 ducks (mostly shovelers and greenwing teal) and 6 geese (five white-front and one snow); Sat., 222 hunters, 430 ducks and three snow geese; Sun., 64 hunters, 62 ducks and one snow goose.
