Step by step instructions
French toast is one of the easiest breakfast recipes around. Take a look at these simple steps!
- Slice your sourdough bread into ¾" thick slices.
- In a bowl, mix the eggs, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt together with a whisk.
- Soak the bread slices for 10 minutes on each side.
- Heat the butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the bread 3-4 minutes per side.
Serve warm with butter and maple syrup!
Tips for success
- Before you start cooking, preheat your oven to 400 degrees and place a baking sheet inside. Transfer the cooked french toast slices to the oven to keep warm until you are finished cooking and ready to serve.
- Make sure your skillet is preheated over medium-low heat before you start cooking. You don't want to cook it too quickly and burn the custard. It needs to cook slowly to cook evenly.
- The bread should be cut into ¾" slices for the best results. If it's thinner, the bread won't be able to stand up to the custard and may fall apart. Day old or stale bread is best for french toast.
- Use a combination of butter and vegetable oil to prevent the butter from burning in the skillet.
How to store and reheat
Leftovers can be stored, wrapped in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees until warmed through.
