She was born on August 26, 1914 in Fitchburg, and was 85 years old. She was the third daughter born to Mr. and Mrs Robert Gwynne of Fitchburg, MA.

She was Clarice predeceased by both of her sisters, Mrs. Murphy of Winchester, MA She and Mrs. Grace Adams, of Fitchburg, MA. is survived by her two daughters and their husbands Lynelle and William Faircloth of Ridgefield, CT, and Diane and Richard Burns of Boston, MA. She leaves behind 5 grandchildren in-cluding Gwynne and Cameron Faircloth and Jeffrey, Sara, Jenny Burns.

She also leaves behind members the Murphy family, the Adams family, the Wagner family, and the Toro family. Jeannette Gwynne graduated from Fitchburg State Teachers College in 1936 and moved to Westport, CT as a young, single Torno, teacher, in She married her husband, William 1938 where they resided in Westport, CT for more than 30 years. Mrs. Torno taught at the Greens Farms Elementary School from 1938-1944 when she semi-retired to become a mother. After her two daughters were grown and in school she went back to her career in teaching at the Burr Farms School and husband retired in the mid 1970's.

She and her Bill moved to Boynton Beach, Florida, After her husband's death in 1978, Mrs. Toro became a full time Florida resident. She moved to Boston in August of 1998, where she resided at the Burrage House until February of 2000 when she relocated to the Spring House in Jamaica Plain. She was a very active mother, teacher, and co-owner of Torno Lumber along with her husband. She was a pianist, a member of the Westport Women's Club, an active member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church and on various PTA boards.

As a Florida resident she was active in the Boynton Beach Woman's Club and a devoted member of the Seacrest Presbyterian Church. UPTON-T. Graydon, age 92, a former Assistant Secretary of The Treasury for International Finance and a former U.S. Director of the World Bank, died May 15 at Hartland, from a heart attack. A resident of Washington, D.C., Mr. Upton was born in Salem, Mass.

He attended Milton Academy and Harvard University, where he was class poet and on the football team. He studied international banking. in Hamburg and London. From 1936-1940 he was the European representative of the Bank of Manhattan. Returning to New York in 1940, he joined the seventh Regiment as a private, and subsequently served over five years in the Army and the OSS, attaining the rank of Lt.

Colonel. After the war he became a Vice President of the Philadelphia National Bank, and in 1957 served as President of the Bankers Association of Foreign Trade. In 1958 he was named by President Eisenhower to be Assistant Secretary of a the Treasury for International Finance and a Director of the World Bank. He was the chief U.S. negotiator for establishing the international Development Association as well as the Inter American Development Bank (IADB); he served as executive Vice President of IADB until his retirement in 1971.

In this post, Mr. Upton traveled widely in Latin America implementing the bank's programs in urban and rural development. He was an enthusiastic sailor; a poet and a writer. Upon retirement, he became President of the Pan American Development Foundation and a Trustee of the Cooperative Housing Foundation. He was a member of the Harvard Club of New York, the Metropolitan Club, the Chevy Chase Club and Dacor House.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Ann Nash Upton of Savannah, a daughter Sunshine Appleby of Hartland, and three sons: Joseph of Seattle, Bryan, of Hartland, and George Upton II of No. Hero, as well as five grandchildren. Members requested to attend. John J. McKenna, President Edmund M. Street, Treasurer, Alexander McDonald, of Bangkok Post, Alexander MacDonald, the founding editor of Thailand's oldest English-language newspaper, the Bangkok Post, died in his Marblehead home Sunday of a heart attack. He was 92.

Born in Lynn, Mr. MacDonald worked at the Boston Advertiser, The Boston Evening American, and The Boston Post before moving to Hawaii and joining the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, he joined the US Office of Strategic Services in the Pacific, the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. He spent the latter years of the war in the Burmese jungle, 1 broadcasting Allied news into Japanese-occupied Thailand. When the war ended, Mr.

MacDonald made plans to create an English-speaking newspaper in Thailand. Some of his first staff members were young Thais who had worked with him in the Burmese jungle. Two others were Japanese he hired from a detention camp because they were the only people in Thailand who knew how to run his printing press, he told The Boston Globe in a 1992 interview. "For all its faults, the first copy Kenneth Hayes, 65 University of Maine professor ASSOCIATED PRESS VEAZIE, Maine Kenneth Hayes, a longtime University of Maine professor who also was active in Democratic politics, died yesterday at the age of 65. Mr.

Hayes left teaching in 1996 after suffering a heart attack. He had also been battling cancer, the university said. He taught political science at the Orono campus for 30 years and was the author of three books on Maine politics. In the political sphere, he served a term in the State Senate and ran for Congress in 1988 in an unsuccessful bid to unseat one of his former students, Republican Olympia Snowe. Snowe, now in the US Senate, said Mr.

Hayes will be sorely missed: "For generations of students at the University of Maine, he was a fixture in the political science department and, over the years, literally became a Maine institution." founder publisher; at 92 of the Post aroused the best fatherly instincts in me," Mr. MacDonald wrote in his book, "My Footloose Newspaper Life." Mr. MacDonald was the Post's editor for eight years, often using the paper to promote democracy and free speech. He also wrote a respected column called "Postmen Say." "During his term as the editor of the newspaper, Mr. MacDonald fought censorship and guided the paper through coups, assassinations and prison sentences," said the Post in a front -page tribute yesterday.

In the early 1950s, Mr. MacDonald was forced out of the editorship and banished from Thailand by a military regime that objected to the Post's reporting. Mr. MacDonald returned to the United States and managed a resort on Cape Cod before settling in Marblehead, where he bought the Marblehead Messenger in 1966. He served as editor and publisher before the paper was merged with the Marblehead Reporter.

Material from the Associated Press used in this report. Norman Sunderland Massage therapist; 71 Norman Sunderland, a massage therapist who once worked at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami Beach, died Sunday in his Braintree home. He was 71. Mr. Sunderland was born in Providence.

At the age of 7 he was blinded in a swimming accident. He was a graduate of Methuen High School, where, despite being blind, he played tackle on the school's football team. He attended the Nyland School of Therapy in Brookline, where he received his therapist license. Mr. Sunderland worked for 20 years at the Boston Racquet Club in Post Office Square.

Before that, he worked for 25 years at the Fountainbleu, where his celebrity clientele included Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. Mr. Sunderland leaves his wife, Matilda (Sasso); and a son, Robert of Sarasota, Fla. A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St.

He was 80. Born in Poland, Dr. Levitz grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. He lived in Belmont for 45 years and was a former Cambridge resident. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and Middlesex Medical School of Waltham.

Dr. Levitz was affiliated with Cambridge Hospital and Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge; he was also formerly affiliated with Central Hospital in Somerville. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was internationally known for his pioneering work in medical hypnotherapy, including the use of hypnosis in helping patients to stop smoking, deal with substance abuse, and overcome fears of flying. She was 88. Mrs. Brown was born in Boston. She was a 1929 graduate of Dorchester High. While raising her three children, she worked as a switchboard operator and bookkeeper for the Commander Hotel in Cambridge.

She later joined the staff at Northeastern as a switchboard operator and receptionist. She worked at the university for 25 years, before retiring in 1980. Active in Boston political campaigns, she volunteered and campaigned for many candidates, including the late John D. O'Bryant, a Northeastern vice president and a chairman of the Boston School Committee, and the late city councilor Frederick Langone. Mrs.

Brown was active with the Senior Group at High Point Village in Roslindale, where she lived for 30 years. She enjoyed shopping, crossword puzzles, and the outdoors. Joseph J. Gaffney, 60 Boston firefighter for 33 years Joseph J. Gaffney of Somerville, a firefighter with the Boston Fire Department, died Sunday at Youville Hospital in Cambridge. He was 60. Born in Boston, Mr.

Gaffney lived in Cambridge and was educated in that city's school system. Before beginning his career as a Boston firefighter, he worked as an auto parts manager. Mr. Gaffney began his 33-year career on the Boston Fire Department in 1967. After only a month on the job, he was awarded the John E.

Fitzgerald Medal for Most Meritorious Act, for his efforts in saving the life of a fellow firefighter on Feb. 23, 1967. The medal is the department's top honor and is only given for distinguished acts of heroism. He was promoted to the post of aide to the district chief in 1993. Mr.

Gaffney also served with the Air Force. He leaves his wife, Barbara (Peters); a daughter, Pamela Latham of Portland, Maine; two sons, Joseph Gaffney and Edward Fasano, both of Somerville; a sister, Dorothy Ford; and two grandchildren. Most recently, the Town Council proclaimed July 27 as Lucy Nargozian Day in recognition of her generous volunteer work. She worked for 12 years at the Sears mail order store in Boston, retiring in 1977. She spent most of her time volunteering with the Massachusetts General Hospital library, Project SAVE, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Elderserve, and the St. James Armenian Apostolic Church social services. She worked with the Watertown Food Pantry and Catholic Charities and was a senior adviser on the Watertown Council of Aging.

Ms. Nargozian was also involved with Massachusetts Senior Action and served on the board for its first five years. She leaves two nieces, Charlotte Nargozian Williams of Georgia and Marilyn Nargozian Coughlin of Needham; and a nephew, Charles, of Watertown. Services will be held today at 11 a.m. in St.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the Army. Mr. White worked as an assistant treasurer with the Kendall Company in Boston. He also served on the board of directors of Spaulding Co. in Randolph, and retired in 1988.

Formerly of Hingham, he resided in Norwell for the past 14 years. He was active in a number of organizations, including serving as chairman of the Norwell advisory board for two terms. He also served on the board of directors of the James Library in Norwell and the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association. He leaves his wife, Amy (Spaulding); and two sons, William H. of New York City and Stephen A.
