Judge acquits 28 people accused in Panama Papers case, including law firm co-founder

  • AP

A judge has acquitted 28 people accused of money laundering in an international case known as the Panama Papers. Among those acquitted Friday was Jürgen Mossack. He's the co-founder of a law firm authorities say was at the center of a conspiracy to hide money linked to illegal activities. A Panamanian judge found that the evidence against Mossack didn't comply with the chain of custody after authorities raided the office of the now-defunct firm. The judge also noted that other evidence in the Panama Papers case “was not sufficient and conclusive to determine the criminal responsibility of the accused.”

He will rise five places to a career-high 19 in the rankings on Monday, the first time in 19 years Chile will have two top-20 players. Nicolas Jarry is the other. After his second title of the year and career, Tabilo will play local Daniel Evans at Wimbledon. Ofner follows his first tour final by facing Aleksandar Vukic of Australia at Wimbledon.

Olympics next for Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson after running 9.77 in the 100

  • AP

Jamaica’s newest 100-meter national champion sent a message after his victory, insisting he was slowing down 60 meters into a race where he ran the fastest time in the world in two years. Kishane Thompson won Jamaica’s 100-meter national championship in 9.77 seconds, setting himself up as a threat to join his country’s greatest sprinter, Usain Bolt, as an Olympic champion next month. Thompson says his coach wanted him to go hard only for 60 or 70 meters, just to ensure he'd make the top three and qualify for the Olympics. His time puts him in the mix for the Olympic podium, along with Americans Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley and another Jamaican, Oblique Seville.

The UN starts to move tons of aid from US-built pier after security fears suspended work there

  • By JULIA FRANKEL and WAFAA SHURAFA - Associated Press

The United Nations says workers have begun moving tons of humanitarian aid that had been piled up at a United States-built pier off Gaza's coast and distributing it to warehouses in the besieged territory. It's an important step as the U.S. considers whether to reconnect the pier whose functioning has been challenged by heavy seas. It is not clear when the aid might reach Palestinians in Gaza, where experts have warned of high risk of famine in the war between Israel and Hamas. Meanwhile, the U.S. has presented new language to intermediaries Egypt and Qatar aimed at trying to jump-start stalled Israel-Hamas negotiations.

Bardet wins hot and hilly opening Tour de France stage in Italy while Cavendish struggles

  • AP

Two-time podium finisher Romain Bardet has won the opening stage of the Tour de France and claimed the yellow jersey as cycling’s biggest race began in Italy for the first time. One of the most challenging opening legs in recent memory created problems for Mark Cavendish and many other riders on Saturday. But in the extreme heat, favorites Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard both finished safely in the main pack. Bardet attacked with slightly more than 50 kilometers to go and caught up with his DSM-Firmenich PostNL teammate Frank van den Broek and the pair just barely held off the onrushing peloton in the flat finish.

Animal rescuers try to keep dozens of dolphins away from Cape Cod shallows after mass stranding

  • AP

Animal rescuers were trying to keep dozens of dolphins away from shallow waters around Cape Cod after 125 of the creatures earlier stranded themselves. Teams in Massachusetts found one group of 10 Atlantic white-sided dolphins swimming in a dangerously shallow area at dawn on Saturday, and managed to herd them out into deeper water. That is according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Scouts also found a second group of 25 dolphins swimming close to the shore near Eastham, with herding efforts there ongoing as the tide dropped throughout the morning. Ten dolphins died during the stranding Friday at The Gut — or Great Island — in Wellfleet, at the Herring River.

The Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals got a head start on Day Two of the NHL draft by making a trade before any selections were made. The Sabres got fourth-line winger Beck Malenstyn from the Capitals for the 43rd pick. Malenstyn gives Buffalo valuable forward depth as it tries to end the league's longest playoff drought. The 26-year-old is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer. The Capitals stayed busy after trading a 2025 second-round pick to Calgary earlier in the week for winger Andrew Mangiapane.

Mauritanians are voting for their next president, with the incumbent Mohamed Ould Ghazouani widely expected to win the vote after positioning Mauritania as a strategic ally of the West in a region swept by coups and violence. He came to power in 2019 following the first democratic transition in the country’s history, and on Saturday promised to respect the results of the vote. Although his opponents accused him of corruption and mismanagement, he remains popular among Mauritanians who see him as a beacon of stability.

Biden’s meandering answers and struggles to respond to Trump prompted The New York Times editorial board to declare Friday that he should exit the race. Biden and his wife, Jill, plan to attend an afternoon campaign meeting Saturday in East Hampton, New York. They will then go to Red Bank, New Jersey, for an evening fundraiser.

Jan. 6 shadows the 2024 campaign, but not on the debate stage. That alarms democracy advocates

  • By LISA MASCARO - AP Congressional Correspondent

In the first presidential debate, the Capitol riot and Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election weren't center stage. And that's alarming to democracy advocates. The insurrection is a big part of campaigns this year but it's sometimes obscured by the race for the White House. Trump is under indictment for working to overturn the results of the election four years ago, but he said during the debate that he had “nothing to do” with the Jan. 6 insurrection. In response, President Joe Biden failed to forcefully hold Trump accountable. The Democratic chairman of the House Jan. 6 is warning of the potential of another Capitol attack.

One recipient is a recently opened LGBTQ+ community center in Florida. nonprofit literature advocacy group PEN America says in a report that 30% of books that have been banned include LGBTQ+ characters or themes.

Despair in the air: For many voters, the Biden-Trump debate means a tough choice just got tougher

For many voters in the United States, there's despair in the air after the presidential debate this past week. There's much celebration in the universe of Donald Trump's supporters and for others, there's a lot of angst due to President Joe Biden's poor performance. In dozens of interviews across the country, debate-watchers who aren't in Trump's camp are dispirited about the ballot choices they have in November. For some, the debate suddenly crystalized their worries that neither man is fit to lead the nation. Others didn't consider Biden's performance disqualifying even as they wished for a better alternative to Trump.

It was destroyed by IS in 2017 and has been a focal point of UNESCO’s restoration efforts since 2020. UNESCO said that five large-scale explosive devices designed for significant destruction were found inside the southern wall of the Prayer Hall on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Mary Earps to leave Man United in another big departure for club's women's team

England goalkeeper Mary Earps is leaving Manchester United after a five-year stint. It marks a third big departure for the club’s women’s team in less than a week. Earps helped England win the 2022 European Championship and reach last year’s World Cup final but said on social media Saturday that it was time for a “new challenge” in her club career. Earps did not say which club she will join next but she has been widely linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Her decision comes after United captain Katie Zelem and Spain striker Lucia Garcia also announced this week that they are leaving the club. All three players were in the last year of their contracts.
